NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A brand new aviation program at Siegel High School is helping students aim high. With drones on tables and flight simulators sitting all around the classroom, it's easy to forget this is a high school class.
Scott Myers is the aviation instructor. The new program is still in its first year and was created to prepare students for a career in a field that's hiring.
"They're needing across-the-board pilots, mechanics, avionics technicians," he said.
The new program sits inside a new addition and includes a lecture hall, two labs and a room to simulate flight.
Students like Luke Schouten say it's on thing to read about aviation, but all the hands-on opportunities, bring the industry to life. Students who see themselves in a cockpit can follow a four year path and earn their private pilot license.
Myers says watching his students take off is thrilling.
