MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The leader of Tennessee's Achievement School District has announced that he is stepping down from the job in December.
Multiple media outlets report that Superintendent Chris Barbic announced his decision in a letter on the district's website Friday.
The goal of the Achievement School District is to move the bottom 5 percent of schools in Tennessee to the top 25 percent in five years.
After four years on the job, Barbic says the school system is now in a good, stable situation. He also says he wants to take more time to look after himself and his family.
This year, the district is scheduled to control 29 schools and about 10,000 students in Memphis and Nashville, with 27 of the schools being in Memphis.
