FRANKLIN, Tenn. – An alert employee at a Williamson County bank was able to stop a robbery suspect by quickly locking the door – keeping the suspect out.
Officers from the Franklin Police Department were called to the Fifth Third Bank at 2040 Fieldstone Parkway around 1 p.m. Thursday.
Witnesses told police the employee saw a man wearing a heavy coat and carrying a backpack as he walked to the entrance. The suspect was pulling a bandana over his face.
The employee rushed to lock the door – keeping the suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ricky Wornell, outside and the other employees safely inside. They called 911 emergency dispatchers as Wornell fled the scene.
Detective Richard Spaulding was conducting patrols near the Spencer Creek subdivision as part of a home burglary operation when he spotted a vehicle matching the description provided by bank employees.
Spaulding was driving an unmarked police car and followed Wornell to the Maplewood subdivision. By that time, back-up units were also at the scene.
Wornell was taken into custody and charged with aggravated robbery. He was being held on a $100,000 bond and was expected to appear in court at 1 p.m. July 2.
