SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Humane Society of the United States has bought billboards to send a message to the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.
The human society bought three billboards to raise awareness about horse soring which is an illegal practice that has been associated with training show horses. The billboards read: "This isn't tradition. It's animal cruelty."
In 2012, the Humane Society released undercover video showing walking horse trainers abusing the animals.
Last year, a new council was formed to give additional tests to the horses.to make sure they aren't harmed. If there are any signs of abuse the horses will be disqualified.
The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is August 26 through September 5.
