SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Bedford County residents held a courthouse vigil for 62 renters facing eviction from their homes.
Evictions in Tennessee were suspended temporarily because of COVID-19. According to a news release from the Bedford County Listening Project, some landlords filed eviction notices as soon as that suspension expired.
On Wednesday afternoon, renters and other community members gathered at the courthouse to pray for the families facing eviction and those who have been threatened with water and utility shut-offs.
The group is calling on officials to hold a public forum and do what they can to slow or prevent evictions and utility shut-offs.
