A Belmont student has won her way to one of the biggest hot dog eating contests in the nation.

Stevie Palmer will be competing in Nathan's Famous Hot Dog eating contest on July 4 in Coney Island.

She said she had to train for her qualifying match in Louisville, where she ate ten hot dogs in ten minutes. That earned her a spot in the Coney Island showdown.

"I had to eat soggy buns for a week in order to get use to the texture, but um, now it's fine. I mean it's good," said Palmer.

It all started with an assignment at Belmont requiring students to brand themselves on Twitter.

Palmer chose "professional eater" and soon the association recommended she compete for real.

“[I’m] not necessarily eating fast or eating an extremely [large] amount of food, but just making all my meals larger and kind of like eating more, drinking a lot more water, just to kind of help expand my stomach rather than let it shrink before the competition,” she said.

Palmer will compete against more than a dozen women for the Nathan's title.
