Blind football announcer defies the odds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A blind Nashville high school football announcer has defied the odds, and inspired many throughout the season.

Gordon Mote has been calling the games for Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA) this season. He has been blind since birth. He was the school’s baseball announcer for the last two years, but admits he was hesitant to take on the role at football games.

“The games move so much faster,” said Mote. “When Coach Ellson said, ‘we think you should be the guy to do football,’ I really did laugh.”

Mote relies on three spotters to relay information he needs during the games. They will describe what is happening on the field, and then Mote will repeat the information. He said they have perfected the process over the course of the season. He said he does a lot of research each week before the game to make sure he is pronouncing names correctly and is familiar with the opposing team.

“The biggest compliment I’ve heard is, I didn’t know he was blind,” said Mote.

“Literally, the play just stopped, and he is already telling us what’s next,” said Mike Ellson, Athletic Director at CPA. “I’m just blown away by his passion, knowledge and willingness to make athletics fun.”

Mote is also a CPA parent and a Grammy nominated musician. He said he is a big sports fan and enjoys the opportunity to be in the press box during games.

“This is just a way to give back to CPA teachers, administrators and students for all the joy they have given to our family,” said Mote.

Mote said he didn’t take the announcing job to be in the spotlight, but he hoped he was able to encourage people in the crowd.

“I hope they are encouraged to be all they can be and not let anything hold them back,” said Mote. “If we can encourage people, that’s what it’s all about.”
