Bonnaroo, Miley Cyrus Oppose Counseling Bill

Posted

Tennessee’s counseling referral bill recently signed into law has gained more backlash from organizations and celebrities.

The bill has been highly criticized, saying it discriminates certain people groups, specifically the LGBT community.

However, Governor Haslam said the bill allows counselors the chance to refer clients to another counselor, and does not target a specific group or belief.

Since Governor Bill Haslam signed the bill, several groups have voiced their opposition including the Tennessee ACLU and Tennessee Equality project.

The American Counseling Association announced it would be reconsidering holding its annual conference in Music City because of the new law.

Bonnaroo music festival tweeted out its statement in support of the LGBT community Friday morning.

“We are deeply disheartened by the recent anti-LGBT legislation that passed in our home state of Tennessee. Despite this setback for equality, Bonnaroo will continue to be a force for promoting and embracing openness and acceptance. We have forged a strong bond with the TN community and intend to use our voice to champion equal rights for everyone everywhere. We hope that our fans will join us in radiating positivity in the face of this unfortunate ruling. #NoHateInMyState #RadiatePositivity”

Pop star Miley Cyrus has also been vocal about the issue. She posted a picture on Instagram created by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).

The issue came as other states have passed laws some view as discriminatory.  In North Carolina, there have been protests, and canceled conventions and concerts.
