NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With polls showing Megan Barry and David Fox in a statistical dead tie both candidates spent much of Labor Day campaigning instead of taking the day off.

Barry and Fox briefly appeared together but then spoke separately at an annual picnic sponsored by the local Teamster Union.

"It’s going to be a close race, no lie, but at the end of the day we think our base is very excited," Megan Barry told reporters.

Fox spent most of his time shaking hands and greeting potential voters.

"We're in the home stretch," Fox told one person.

Early voting numbers were also released Monday showing that 58,848 voters cast ballots compared with 53,995 for the August general election.

Regular voting for the run-off election has been set to begin Thursday morning.
