A suspect, wanted for the alleged rape of an 18-year-old with multiple medical issues, reportedly shot himself when authorities tried to make contact with him. The suspect was said to be the 18-year-old’s caretaker.
The incident happened late Saturday in La Vergne at the suspect’s apartment in the Summer Creek Apartments.
Reports stated the man, who was not identified, reportedly raped the 18-year-old who suffers from several medical issues, including cerebral palsy.
Officials were investigating the rape allegation and had identified the male caretaker as the suspect. They went with negotiators to the man’s apartment Saturday where they saw movement inside.
SWAT members and EMS officials were also at the scene. A single gunshot was heard from inside the apartment, and when SWAT members went in, they found the suspect with a self-inflicted wound to his head.
EMS rendered aid at the scene, and he was taken to a local hospital before being transferred by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition
