A plume of chlorine gas triggered evacuations in Rutherford County Wednesday, but not everyone was alerted.
Rutherford County sent the message through their emergency alert notification system. However, those alerts are only sent out to residents who have signed up for the service.
Bradley Smith said he came home to a disaster area, and had no idea what was going on.
He wanted to make sure that next time, he gets that emergency text before its too late.
"It's better to be safe and know what's going on. Especially with the Gatlinburg fires and stuff like that, you never know what could happen," said Smith.

Audio from a 911 call from the scene shows that the driver of the truck told dispatchers he hit a trailer laying in the middle of the road.
