Jay Steele Resigns From Metro Schools

Posted

Officials with Metro Schools announced that Chief Academic Officer Jay Steele will resign Friday, Dec. 4.

The announcement came in a press release from Metro Nashville Schools Monday afternoon. It said Steele will be leaving his position with Metro Schools to be an education consultant.

Steele was named interim superintendent in June, but a teacher protested saying it was an open meetings violation, and was denied the position after a second vote. It was given to Chris Henson instead.

Steele's last day of employment with the district will be this Friday, Dec. 4.

It included this statement from Interim Director of Schools Chris Henson:

“On behalf of our staff and students, we greatly appreciate Dr. Steele’s service to our school district. His work most notably led to the transformation of our high schools through the Academies of Nashville model. As a result, our district has been nationally recognized for our high school reform.
Appointing a new Chief Academic Officer is a responsibility best left to the new permanent Director of Schools that the Board intends to hire before June next year. In the meantime, we will rely on the deep bench of talent in our Leadership & Learning department to continue supervising and supporting our school principals during this time of transition.”

Steele also tweeted the announcement saying he was honored to have served the students of Nashville.
