MANCHESTER, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Coffee County jail was targeted in a ransomware attack. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and state Homeland Security cyber experts are investigating.

At first, staff at the jail noticed electronic files mysteriously being moved, but Monday morning, the entire system locked up.

Shortly after that, a message was sent demanding payment to unlock all the files. The files include arrest, booking and sentencing records for every inmate as well as other business files.

The Coffee County Sheriff told NewsChannel 5 there are paper back-ups, but as you might imagine that slows things considerably. There are also limitations in place due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
