Rutherford County Commissioner Pettus Read called for Sheriff Robert Arnold's resignation following the his indictments.
Other County leaders and community members joined in a news conference outside of the Rutherford County Jail Tuesday.
"His indictment of misusing his authority and operating a scheme to pocket funds is not what those who elected him to that office expect of their elected officials," said Read.
Sheriff Arnold, his uncle, John Vanderveer, and Joe Russell, the sheriff's chief over administration, faced a 14-count indictment accusing them of profiting from the sale of electronic cigarettes to inmates.
Arnold was expected to enter a plea of not guilty on these charges.
