A severely disabled man was prepared to surrender a dog he recently rescued from the street after receiving a letter that said he's need to pay a $300 pet deposit.
"He said he needs a $300 deposit and he's disabled, they're in section 8 housing, and there's just no way we can do it," said Dickson County Humane Society General Manager Vivienne Akhdary. "I said I will take the dog right now since you can't take it back, and I will make a few calls."
In just a few short days, Trixie the dog had become fiercely protective of Jerry Hawsey, who had suffered a brain aneurysm when he was 21-years-old that left him unable to read, write, drive, and almost unable to walk.
Jerry's childhood friend, Mark Billings, helps Jerry around the house and is the one who took the dog to the Humane Society.
"It was sad, just like losing a kid because she's family," said Billings. "Vivienne just said she'd do what she could to help us."
Akhdary put out a call for help on Facebook. Within two hours, strangers had donated the $300 Jerry needed to keep Trixie.
"God gave us a blessing," Billings said. "We don't deserve it but we're thankful for it."
