According to the CDC, more than 30 million Americans deal with diabetes, and for many, that means painful injections.

Some Nashville doctors have now been prescribing a new form of insulin. It's called Afrezza and uses a powder-form of insulin.

The treatment comes in an inhaler, and according to Nurse Practitioner Brannan Cole, inhaling insulin can help some patients manage their diabetes without needing needles.

"Managing diabetes with an insulin syringe seems simple to most non-diabetics, so some people aren't very understanding of why another option would be desirable, " Cole said. "Insulin dependent diabetes has a wide reach across the lifecycle. If a patient is an appropriate candidate, Afrezza has the potential to greatly improve quality of life."

Many who have used Afrezza have said no more needles is a wonderful thing.
