Police have identified the driver who they said hit and killed a 2-year-old girl in Clarksville.

Officials with the Clarksville Police Department said 27-year-old Joseph Pennington of Clarksville was backing out of a parking space at town house complex on East Knollwood Circle when he hit the child.

Before leaving, he saw a child on a scooter further up the road, but did not see any other children.

As he backed up, two individuals were signaling him to stop his vehicle.

When he got out of his vehicle he found that he had hit 2-year-old Delany Garner.

Delany had been playing in the grassy area between the town house buildings and then crossed behind Pennington's vehicle as he was backing out of his parking space.

It was still considered an ongoing investigation. However, there had not yet been any charges made, and police said they did anticipate any to come.
