A teen who was shot in the head during a violent home invasion in 2016 reached a milestone many were not sure he would make.

His mother recalled the emotions she felt after a near tragedy that almost took the life of her only son.

"We didn't know if William was going to make it," said Samica Payne.

William was a bright student at East Nashville Magnet High School. He was a quiet kid who enjoyed playing video games and working his part-time job, but that all changed in January 2016.

"William was shot in the head during a home invasion. Apparently they had the wrong house. William was in the back room asleep when I was letting my daughter in one night," said Payne.

When Payne let her daughter inside, two masked men followed in behind. William woke up once he heard the screaming, and when he walked down the hall, one of the men shot William in the head.

"We didn't know what we were going to get from William when they said he would survive. William had a portion of his brain removed," said Payne.

But not only did William survive, he did what many thought would be impossible.

William walked across the stage to receive his high school diploma. It wasn't an easy journey, but his mother was beside him the entire way, even on graduation day.

"I just needed someone to hold me," said William Harper.

His mother was there to hold him, and as long as he keeps fighting, she'll keep fighting too.

"But as you can see William is a fighter. He's still fighting," said Payne.

William still has some therapy to go through for his left arm and leg, but his next goal is to go to college.
