FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. – An officer for the Fayetteville Police Department has been accused of theft in an investigation from the TBI.
TBI agents said 43-year-old Richard Steelman was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of theft. Authorities began investigating Steelman two days before.
According to investigators, he received a check on March 16 from Fayetteville City Hall for in-service training. Several months later, he reported the check, worth $546.56, missing.
He was issued a replacement check and cashed it on July 30.
Six days later, TBI officials said Steelman cashed the initial check that he had reported missing.
He was booked into the Lincoln County Jail and released on his own recognizance. Steelman is currently on leave with pay.
