Fire Breaks Out At Hickman Elementary School

Nashville firefighters responded to Hickman Elementary School where there believe a lightning strike may have been the cause of a fire.

Smoke and flames could be seen on the roof of the school located on Stewarts Ferry Pike Tuesday.

The initial reported suggested the fire was sparked by a lightning strike.

The school was evacuated of its YMCA after-school program by a school custodian who saw the smoke.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, and tried to protect other classrooms by using tarps to contain the smoke and water.

Joe Bass with Metro Nashville Public Schools said the damage didn't appear to be too bad, and could likely have things fixed by Wednesday morning.

Metro Schools released the following statement on Twitter:

"If you can believe it, lightning struck another one of our buildings tonight. Hickman Elementary had some minor roof damage. Roofing crews are there right now fixing the damage, and Hickman Elementary will be OPEN tomorrow morning for a normal school day. The affected classrooms (4 of them) will not be used until everything is 100% fixed and the smoke smell is gone."

Sylvan Park Elementary was struck by lightning just a couple of weeks ago.
