MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A middle school football player was injured during a game Tuesday night in Rutherford County and was flown to the hospital.
The incident happened during the last two minutes of a football game in Murfreesboro between Siegel Middle School and Oakland Middle School. The player was a student at Siegel.
The TSSAA said the boy had just been hit in the head during a tackle Tuesday night when he got up, ran to the sidelines and then collapsed.
Medical crews immediately suspected a concussion.
The student was sent by LifeFlight medical helicopter to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Hospital officials said the boy was in stable condition.
The student, whose name NewsChannel 5 is witholding due to the family's request for privacy, was said to be alert and stable Wednesday, while the hospital runs some tests on him.
TSSAA said the school followed all proper procedures for athletes who appear to have concussions.
Following a concussion, coaches and doctors often worry about patients getting a second one before the first has time to heal. It's called Second Impact Syndrome, and those concussions are often fatal.
