FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WTVF) — Franklin High School's mascot and nickname is now the Admirals.
The school's old mascot, The Rebels, came under fire during the recent Black Lives Matter movement. A petition was created demanding the name be changed. and a task force was subsequently created to decide if the name should be changed.
It was was adopted in 1937 when it changed from the Pioneers to the Rebels. Decades ago, Franklin High School did away with the use of the Confederate flag with the mascot, and the rebel mascot slowly stopped showing up at sporting events.
Franklin High School Principal Dr. Shane Pantall announced the new name Tuesday night on social media.
