Gas Leak On Dabbs Avenue Causes Evacuation

Posted

A natural gas leak at a church forced part of a Nashville neighborhood to evacuate.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department, Nashville Fire Department, and Piedmont Gas crews arrived at the scene on Dabbs Avenue just after 11 a.m. Sunday.

The gas leak happened in the parking lot of the St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church.

Crews worked quickly to contain the leak and secure the area. Several families had to be evacuated.

Neighbors said the unexpected scene caught them off guard.

“It’s pretty bad,” said neighbor Rhon Reid. “I'm glad I'm this way, not down that way. Someone could be smoking a cigarette, and it could have been worse, way worse, than it was today.”

No one was injured. Crews said a car broke the cap over a pipe, which caused the leak.
