Several people helped pull a driver, who was hit in a head-on crash, from his vehicle which had burst into flames.
Kentucky trucker Tyler Hoff was just one of several semis that dropped off and picked up loads on Elm Hill Pike Friday morning.
During that time, in the center lane of Elm Hill Pike, another semi was stopped, waiting to turn into a nearby business.
"The red truck was in the left lane, coming towards me," Hoff said.
Driving west bound, the man in that red pick up fell asleep behind the wheel. His truck crossed into the center lane and collided with the semi head on.
Before first responders arrived, an officer and two Good Samaritans were on the scene. "The cop got on his radio and called in for help and then me and the other volunteer fire fighter quickly got the guy out of the back seat of his truck," Hoff explained.
Meanwhile, they began to see flames coming from the pick up truck. "I went and grabbed as many fire extinguishers from semi trucks, whatever I could find and started suppressing the fire until the fire department got there," Hoff said.
He also has seven years of fire fighting experience and just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
"Which may have saved this man's life. Had the vehicle became engulfed we would have a bigger disaster out here this morning," Metro Police Officer Greg Curtis said.
The driver of the pick up truck was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center in critical condition but his injuries are not life threatening.
"Just praying for him, hope he gets better," Hoff said.
The driver of the semi truck and the passenger asleep in it's cab were not injured.
