A memorial service was held for Max Barry, the only child of Nashville Mayor Megan Barry and her husband, Bruce.

Barry died from an apparent drug overdose Saturday night in Colorado. He was 22-years-old.

Family and friends gathered Monday night to support the family at a private visitation. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. at the Belcourt Theatre.

Governor Bill Haslam and former Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell were among the hundreds in attendance.

Perhaps the most moving moment of the service came when Max’s father, Bruce, spoke.

“The circumstances last Saturday in Denver tell the story of his death and not the story of his life,” Bruce Barry said. “The person he really was is not the person that was there on Saturday.”

At City Hall Monday, a small bouquet of black and white flowers sat next to a small ledger with a note which read "Please feel free to sign the guest book and leave a note for Mayor Barry on the loss of her son, Max."

Throughout the day strangers could be seen leaving words of compassion and encouragement for the Mayor and her husband, Bruce.

His obituary described him as having a "soul that was restless and calm and free and beautiful and kind."

The family has asked for contributions in his honor to be made to the Oasis Center and/or Nashville Humane Society
