NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A trial has begun over how Nashville's five jail facilities pay hundreds of correctional officers.

More than 850 current and past Davidson County Sheriff's Office corrections officers are the suing Metro Nashville government over $7.04 million in back wages they say they are owed, dating back to 2006.

Attorney David Garrison told the jury Tuesday in U.S. District Court that the officers are receiving lower hourly rates than the officers are being told they are getting paid.

According to court filings, the employees say they earn hourly wages, yet are being paid an annual salary divided by their hours worked, resulting in less than the hourly wage listed.

Assistant Metro Attorney Chris Lackey said new hires are told they are paid based on a salary.
