NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced the state's partnership with Kroger and Gravity Diagnostics to increase coronavirus testing with drive-thru test sites.

"I'm excited today to announce a new partnership with Kroger. Kroger is teaming with the commonwealth inn effort to test 20,000 people statewide over the next 5 weeks."

The testing will have a 48-hour turnaround. Beshear said it will nearly double the number of tests conducted as well as the 2,000 tests a day the state has been seeing.

The first location will be opened in Frankfort on Monday. Beshear said the state hopes to announce another location this week and two more next week.

He said the free drive-thru testing is intended for:

  • Priority1 & 2 guidance
  • Health care workers
  • first responders
  • People 65 years old or older
  • Those with chronic health conditions

In a separate effort, Kroger will also be providing staff, personal protective equipment and a sign-up portal.

Testing will be conducted Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kentucky currently has a total of 1,963 COVID-19 cases and 97 people have died from the virus.
