NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Thousands of kids will have a special Christmas thanks to gifts from the Last Minute Toy Store.
Opening day for the store was the largest single day in the program’s 26 year history. At the close of Friday, 3799 people left with Christmas gifts for their children.
The store provides toys for Davidson County families in need who have not been helped by, or missed the deadline for other local Christmas programs.
Thanks to donations from the community, the Sheriff’s Office Service Center was packed with new books, games, sporting goods, stocking stuffers and bikes for kids of all ages.
Friday afternoon, carloads of donations were still arriving.
“It’s really what Christmas is all about,” said Dale Robble, President of the Last Minute Toy Store. “It’s about giving and showing love.”
Over 1000 volunteers help guide families through the process and help them pick out toys, for free.
“One lady said this is the first year her 16 year old will have a nice Christmas,” said Samantha Pace, a volunteer.” I was like, wow, that’s cool that we can help out.”
First time shopper, Jasmine Holt was hoping to get a football for her 8-year-old son Antonio. She left with a bag full of books, games, a football, soccer ball and a bike.
“I am very grateful. I can’t thank these wonderful people enough,” said Holt.
The final day for the store will be Saturday, Dec. 21. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations can be dropped off during the day.
There are also tickets available for eligible shoppers. 350 additional tickets were released Friday. Verification will be made to determine if children have been served in other programs. Parents or guardians must bring a picture I.D., proof of Davidson County residence, something official showing their child's name and date of birth, proof of income.
The store is located at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Service Center at 5117 Harding Place, Nashville, TN 37211.
