A pregnant 16-year-old has died after being shot at the Richland Inn in Pulaski.
Officials with the Pulaski Police Department said the shooting happened around 7 p.m. Monday.
Police found the pregnant 16-year-old with at least one gunshot wound. She was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where her baby passed away. The 16-year-old died Wednesday, according to officials.
A lieutenant with the Pulaski Police Department called the crime heartbreaking.
"Any cases involving children are very difficult for officers," Lieutenant Joey Turner said. "We carry this stuff just like anyone else does. We just have to tuck it away and move on."
Reports stated the victim and the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Colton Daniel Perryman, had been living at the Richland Inn after a fire destroyed their home a few weeks before the shooting.
Perryman has been charged with two counts of second degree murder and one count of fabricating/tampering with evidence.
He was being held in the Giles County Jail on a $900,000 bond.
Lawrence County Schools confirmed the victim was a junior in high school. They added, “We send our condolences to the family, our thoughts and prayers are with them."
