A man was taken into custody after a late-night, hours-long manhunt in Humphreys County.

The ordeal began around 8 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in Waverly and lasted until midnight.

An officer with the Waverly Department of Public Safety said Stephen Turner violently assaulted two women, one of whom was his ex-girlfriend - who also had an active order of protection against him.

The alleged victims had gone to an apartment to get personal items, thinking he wasn't there. Police said he hid in the residence and attacked them when they entered.

They ran outside, at which point Turner allegedly assaulted them. As they tried to run away, investigators said Turner fired shots at them.

Neither victim was struck.

Turner reportedly ran back inside the apartment once neighbors called 911.

Offers responded to the scene and evacuated several residents. However, Turner was able to escape through a back door.

He fled to a vacant house but officers were able to breach the door before a standoff ensued. Turner was taken into custody without incident.

The 28-year-old was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was held on a $160,500 bond.
