Police have identified a man who was killed in a two-car crash on Interstate 24.

Authorities said 52-year-old Ronald Acosta, of Smyrna, was killed in the crash on the interstate near the Rutherford County line around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

According to reports, Acosta, driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, left his lane and hit the back of a 2010 Ford Focus.

That caused both vehicles to leave the road, hit a grass embankment, and strike a tree line, according to officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Police said Acosta was not wearing a seatbelt. He was ejected from the vehicle and passed away at the scene.

Toxicology reports have been ordered to find out whether or not Acosta was impaired. Authorities confirmed they found two open containers of beer and several ounces of marijuana in his vehicle.

Those in the Focus, identified as 27-year-old Rebecca Riggsby and her passenger, 25-year-old Robert Riggsby, were injured in the crash. They were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Officials said they were both wearing seatbelts.

No further details were released.
