Police said a 19-year-old has been charged after a 14-year-old was shot and killed.

Authorities said 14-year-old Clayton Gangji was fatally wounded while sitting in an SUV with 19-year-old Zachary Able and two others at a ball field near the intersection of Hadley Avenue and Old Hickory Boulevard.

Gangji was taken to Summit Medical Center by Able around 6 a.m. Saturday. He passed away at the hospital.

Detectives said they interviewed teens in the incident. It was believed Able was handling a pistol in the vehicle when the gun discharged.

The bullet passed through Able's hand and hit Gangji. Able was treated for his injury at the hospital.

Officials confirmed Saturday afternoon that Able was being charged with criminal homicide in the case.

Able had initially told officials the shooting was the result of a robbery near Percy Priest Lake; however, further investigation proved that was not true, and Able admitted he was holding the gun when it fired.

The investigation remained ongoing.
