Officers were called to a Waffle House in Nashville after a man with a gun was found hiding in the restaurant.

An employee at the White Bridge Place location called police to report a man with a loaded 9 mm handgun hiding in the back near a refrigerator.

According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, he was seen on surveillance video removing the gun from his jacket.

Officers arrived on the scene and the suspect told them he was trying to protect him and his girlfriend. He said he tried to hide the gun when he saw police.

He also said the handgun belonged to his girlfriend and not him.

He was taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.

Police said he claimed he was convicted of assaulting a teacher in Mississippi and had been on probation for it.
