Police Investigate Death Of Nashville Swimmer

Posted

Authorities are investigating the death of a Nashville swimmer who was visiting Florida with family.

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Wendy Rose said in an email late Sunday that 21-year-old Tate Ramsden drowned in the outside swimming pool at a Sarasota YMCA on Saturday afternoon.

He was a student at Dartmouth College.

The report from Sarasota Deputies provides some heartbreaking insight into how the star swimmer died.

According to officials who responded on Saturday, Tate was practicing underwater techniques, he was attempting to complete what's called a "100" which is four laps across the pool without surfacing for air.

Tate's older sister was nearby watching him swim when she noticed he wasn't moving. Life guards pulled the 21-year-old from the water and attempted CPR but there was nothing they could do.

"It brings into focus to me more than anything else, taking advantage of each day because you never know. He’s an athletic guy, here today gone tomorrow. The lesson from all of this is take advantage of each day you have," says John Morse, Tate's former coach at the Nashville Aquatic Club.

In an email to students and faculty, Dartmouth's President  wrote that Ramsden's family has planned a memorial service next weekend in his hometown of Nashville.

Ramsden swam for Dartmouth on a scholarship as a freshman and sophomore. He was scheduled to graduate in 2017.

"He was a very intelligent kid with a quirky sense of humor," Morse recalls.

Hanlon said Ramsden was visiting Sarasota with family. He wrote that school officials have been in touch with Ramsden's family "to share our deepest sympathies with them at this time of heartbreaking loss."

The Nashville Aquatics Club also posted this messaged on their Facebook page.
