A man has surrendered to police after allegedly attacking his mother and barricading himself inside their home.

The incident happened early Wednesday at a home on Johnson Ridge Road.

Reports stated 51-year-old Steven Whitson allegedly attacked his 81-year-old mother after he became angry at her for accusing him of taking her prescription medication.

Authorities said Whitson physically attacked her by kicking her and punching her in the face.

Whitson’s mother had a severe injury to her left eye and head, as well as bruising on her neck. Police said the victim told domestic violence detectives the bruising was caused by her son the day before. He had allegedly strangled her.

The victim was helped out of the home by her 86-year-old brother and a neighbor also came to help out.

According to the neighbor, Whitson fired shots toward her from inside the home.

After barricading himself inside for several hours, he surrendered just after midnight, early Wednesday morning.

He was taken into custody without any further incident, according to police, and he was charged with attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault against his mother, as well as aggravated assault against the neighbor.

Whitson was being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.

Authorities said Whitson had also been charged with aggravated assault in 2009. In that case he allegedly pointed an assault rifle at his mother and threatened to kill her. Officials said that case was retired.
