Belmont University has received its largest donation in its 125-year history.

A $15 million donation was made by the Ayers Foundation -- created by FirstBank Chairman Jim Ayers and led by his wife, Janet -- and will go towards need-based student scholarships.

Belmont said it was the biggest donation in its 125-year history.

“This gift will be used to create an endowed scholarship fund that will help countless Belmont students to attain a college education that otherwise would not have been possible for them,” said Dr. Robert Fisher, President of Belmont.

The university also announced it would rename its largest campus building, the Wedgewood Academic Center, in honor of Janet Ayers.

Officials said the newly named building houses more than 50 undergraduate programs, 20 laboratories, many classrooms and offices, two restaurants and a chapel.
