Posted

A device had to be safely detonated after authorities discovered what they say appeared to be a pipe bomb during a traffic stop in Macon County.

Officials with the Lafayette Police Department confirmed that an officer pulled over a car around 10:30 p.m. Monday for an expired registration.

The driver and passenger, whose names were not released, allegedly displayed signs of impairment.

The officer was given permission to search the vehicle and found a device on the passenger side floorboard.

Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team took it to a safe area and detonated it.

No additional details were known.
