A special meeting called of the Lawrence County Grand Jury resulted in the indictment of former county commissioner Jeffrey Hughes.
Hughes was indicted for theft of over a quarter of a million dollars from the Lawrence County Fire and Rescue and theft of over $10,000 from the Cross Roads Volunteer Fire Department.
He was also indicted on 136 counts of forgery.
Bail has been set at $100,000 dollars, but it can't be posted unless those funds have been approved as being from a legitimate source, meaning he can’t post bond with any stolen funds.
It was a joint Investigation between the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, State Comptroller's Office, and the District Attorney's Office.
Authorities were searching for Hughes, but they confirmed he turned himself in Friday afternoon.
