Authorities were called to a scene near MetroCenter after human remains were found in the area.
The discovery was made near Rosa L. Parks Boulevard and 24th Avenue North, not far from the Granstaff Apartments.
Officials with Metro Nashville Police said a survey crew found the skeleton remains while working in a wooded area.
At this point, it's unknown if the person died of natural causes. Police said there are several homeless camps in the area.
Due to extensive decay, investigators said the remains could have been there for months or perhaps a year or more.
Police locked down the area while the investigation remains ongoing.
The Medical Examiner has been called to the scene.
