The Last Minute Toy Store has officially opened and hopes to ensure those families in need have gifts under the Christmas tree this year.
The makeshift store at the Sixty-First Avenue United Methodist Church opened at 6:30 a.m. Friday, and will serve more than 1,600 families over the next few days.
Shoppers are paired with a volunteer who helps them find gifts for their children -- and everything is free to those families.
NewsChannel 5 spoke with shopper Rochelle Hutchison who said if it weren't for this event, her children wouldn't have presents under the Christmas tree.
"This place is a savior for a lot of folks, thousands I would say, and I'm grateful for it," she said. "And I'm sure if my kids find out about it later on in life, they'll be grateful for it, too."
Anyone wanting to participate must have a picture ID, along with proof of income and residency.
You must also be able to show how many children you have, know their ages and bring information that proves they are your children. For example, you could use a medical card.
If you need to know what else you might need to bring, visit www.lastminutetoystore.com for more information.
The Last Minute Toy Store runs until Monday.
