One group has been calling upon Tennessee lawmakers to enact stricter laws for drunk drivers.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving rallied in front of the State Capitol Tuesday morning to urge lawmakers to pass a bill that would require judges to order an ignition interlock device for any offenders.

They said our state has already had success with ignition interlocks, crediting them with stopping more than 160,000 attempts to drink and drive.

“Why wouldn't we want to make sure all drunk driving offenders use them?” said Millie Webb, MADD National President Emeritus. “Please join with me in calling on our legislators to pass this common sense legislation. There is no downside to passing a proven safety measure that will spare others from this devastation of losing a loved one or horrible injuries to this 100 percent preventable crime.”

Tennessee has been one of only 25 states to have an ignition interlock law.
