Metro Police arrested a man for stealing a vehicle while a toddler was still in the back seat.
The father of the 19-month-old girl drove to a store to buy cigarettes Saturday night and left his car running and unlocked, police said.
While he was in the store, Frederick Rutherford allegedly got in the car and drove away.
An officer was able to contact Rutherford from a cell phone left in the car. Rutherford surrendered without incident and was taken into custody at 14th and Heiman Street in North Nashville.
The little girl was not hurt.
Rutherford was charged with vehicle theft, kidnapping, child endangerment and DUI.
Other charges may be coming from Youth Services in the future.
The girl’s father, Emanuel Batey, was also charged with child neglect for leaving his daughter alone.
The two men did not know each other, according to police.
