Detectives said they’re investigating a claim of self-defense after an early morning fatal shooting.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Brandon Edmondson. He was fatally shot in the head around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Highland Ridge Apartments on Due West Avenue.

Authorities confirmed the man who shot Edmondson has been identified as 24-year-old Justin Mick.

Police said the altercation was in relation to Mick’s former girlfriend, who was seeing Edmondson.

According to an investigation, Mick went to get his pickup truck from the apartment complex after he had loaned it to his former girlfriend.

That’s when a confrontation happened in the parking lot between Mick, Edmonson, and the woman.

Mick told detectives that he believed Edmondson was armed, so he fired at him in self-defense.

Edmondson passed away at Skyline Medical Center. Officials said it was unclear if Edmondson had a weapon.

Mick had a handgun permit. He surrendered to officers and was cooperating with detectives.

No charges have been filed pending a full investigation.
