Man Wanted For Questioning In 1980 Double Murder

Posted

Police have asked the public’s help in identifying a subject wanted for questioning in connection with a double murder from 35-years-ago.

Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Carla Atkins and Vickie Stout were last seen on September 17, 1980.

They had left their home in Dover, located in Stewart County, to walk one mile to a store. They were last seen around 3:30 p.m. as they walked back home on State Route 79.

Witnesses reported seeing a blue truck in the area and also reported seeing Carla and Vickie approaching the truck and the driver.

Their bodies were found three weeks later by hikers in what is now known as Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

Throughout the investigation, witnesses described the man driving the truck to TBI Forensic Scientists, who age-progressed the subject’s picture most recently in 2014.

The TBI has asked for assistance in locating the individual believed to have been driving the truck.

Anyone with information should contact the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.
