Wanted Fugitives Arrested In Manchester

Posted

A couple who have called themselves a modern day Bonnie and Clyde were arrested in Manchester Monday and accused of murder and a multi-state crime spree.

Dramatic video showed them running over a woman with their car in Georgia.

Manchester police said both have confessed to several crimes after they were taken down during a traffic stop just outside the city.

Officers pulled their stolen Honda over on Interstate 24.

Assistant Chief Adam Floied said officers then ordered the driver and his female accomplice out of the car.

"They said they were going to go rob a bank. That was their next plan of action," said Floied.

Officers made the arrests after that dramatic video surfaced out of Covington, Georgia. The couple tried to steal a purse from an elderly woman and ran her over with their car while escaping. She later died from her injuries.

Detectives there released composite sketches along with a photo of the dented car the suspects stole.

The two fugitives, Brandon Smith and Stephanie Rodriguez, were then spotted checking into to this Rodeway Inn in Manchester over the weekend.

The owner alerted police after he and a staffer recognized them from alerts online.

"One of my colleagues, Marcus Hill, he also was following the story.  He came to me and then we made the call," said Viren Vaidya, the Inn owner.

Smith and Rodriguez were suspected in a string of recent strong armed robberies in six states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee.

Smith confessed to some of the crimes admitting to a life similar to that of an infamous gangster couple.

"He had made the comment that they were the modern day Bonnie and Clyde. He was proud of it. Yeah," said Floied.

Both suspects were expected to waive extradition and be sent back to Georgia to face robbery and homicide charges.

Police said this was a clear case of where being a good Samaritan paid off. The hotel owner and his staffer will share a $10,000 reward for the tip that led to the arrests.

They were expected to appear in court Tuesday morning.
