A mother has been arrested after allegedly throwing a pair of scissors at her daughter, injuring the juvenile in the chest.

Officials were called to the scene in the 400 block of North 2nd Street around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses said they saw the defendant, identified as 27-year-old Tabisenga Balewa, chasing the juvenile out of a home in that location while holding a pair of scissors.

The juvenile and her mother were not found in the 400 block, but a witness was able to take officers to a location in the 300 block where both were discovered.

Police confirmed the daughter was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital for her injury.

Initially, the mother told authorities her daughter fell and injured herself; however, she later told detectives her daughter had been playing behind a television, and she had asked her to stop three times because she was concerned her daughter would break the television.

She told police she decided to get her daughter’s attention by throwing something at her, and the first thing she saw nearby was a pair of scissors.

When she threw the scissors, they reportedly struck the daughter in the chest and caused a laceration.

Balewa has been charged with assault/reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. She was being held on a $5,000 bond.
