A mother and her daughter have been displaced after an early morning fire broke out at their east Nashville home.

The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at a residence on Cahal Avenue.

Officials with the Nashville Fire Department said the blaze spread quickly, leaving a mom and her daughter only seconds to get out safely.

“One of the residents was still awake lying in bed, and heard popping noise. Shortly after that the alarms went off,” said District Fire Chief Donald Alford.

Crews arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke and flames pouring out of the home. No one was hurt.

One of their neighbors and friend, Marian Mayberry, said it's by the grace of God why the two are still alive.

“When you think about the memoirs you lost and your valuables some of the things you cannot replace,” she said. “You thank God for your life but you can't get back those pictures and memories.”

While the exact cause was still under investigation, the blaze appears to be electrical in nature and possibly started in one of the bedrooms.

At least 50 percent of the home sustained damage and is considered to be a total loss. The mother and her daughter were staying with family members.
