Officials with the Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation said a number of phone calls have recently been placed in which the callers have been posing as MTEMC employees.
Reports stated the fraudulent callers have been contacting members. They have claimed the members’ accounts are past due and subject to cutoff.
"We have received a number of calls this weekend from members who are concerned about scam calls that are affecting them," said MTEMC Communications Coordinator Josh Clendenen. "The callers have been posing as co-op employees, telling the member they are sending a truck to cut their power off and instructing the member to get a prepaid credit or debit card to pay their bill over the phone."
Recently, scammers have been calling on the weekends, whereas in the past they only called during the week.
“Our offices are closed on the weekend, so we are not making any of these calls members are reporting,” said Clendenen.
Anyone who has received this call or receives one in the future, MTEMC officials said you should hang up if you’re unsure if the caller is from MTEMC.
Anyone who is past due will receive an automated call, not someone you can speak with like these fraudulent calls.
Also remember, MTEMC employees will never ask for members’ personal account or payment information unless the call was initiated by the member.
