Nashville Musicians In Fiji During Cyclone

Major damage was left behind after a powerful cyclone tore through the Fiji islands.

Winds gusts were being reported up to 224 miles per hour.

One man was known to have been killed, and officials were still assessing the damage.

In the middle of it all was a man from Nashville - country singer John Stone. With him was his good friend, country artist Darryl Worley, and their wives.

Stone sings almost every night in Downtown Nashville, but this week he took a break and landed right in the middle of a powerful storm that had them pretty nervous for about eight hours.

“We put everything instinct that we had to work,” Worley said. “Thank god I was here with John Stone. I mean that from the bottom of my heart because he came up like I did. We’re true country boys. We’ve got survival instincts, and we put them all to work in this situation. We found us an evacuation point on some higher ground here.”

"We literally stood here on the deck and watched 200 mile an hour winds, and the band played and the bar stayed open,” Stone said. “It was kind of surreal and the wind was just howling. It’s hard to describe in words, and video that we took during the nighttime doesn’t do it justice.”

Stone and Worley said the major damage hit just to the north of them, and now they're trying to organize a benefit concert to help those who lost everything.

Fiji's government has declared a state of natural disaster for 30 days.

The most immediate issue was making sure the nation's 900,000 residents were safe.

The government has been working to clear vital roads, and the main airport reopened Sunday.
