Nashvillians with an affinity for kittens and coffee now have a new way to enjoy both at the same time.
The city's first cat cafe, called Mewsic Kitty Cafe, welcomed customers at a four-day pop-up shop that'll serve as a trial run for a permanent store set to open sometime in 2018.
"I stumbled across the cat cafes in Japan when I was online," said Maegan Phan, who has planned to run the cafe along with her husband. "We just decided to go for it."
From Friday, June 30 to Monday, July 3, Mewsic Kitty Cafe hosted events like Cat Yoga, Mewvie Night, and Mewsic in the Cat Lounge in the basement of Atmalogy on West End. Phan outfitted the temporary space with plenty of cat toys and comfy chairs.
Phan said the inaugural weekend was a success.
"We liked the pop-up model as a way to introduce it to Nashville and see if it’s something people would be into," she said. "We’re super grateful that it seems to be something people are into."
All of the cafe kittens are also adoptable through the Nashville Cat Rescue. As of Sunday afternoon, five of the cats had found permanent homes through the event.
Mewsic Kitty Cafe has hoped to open a permanent location in the summer of 2018.
